OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to charities to support people in need.
In 2019, OzHarvest WA Food Rescue Program rescued more than 1,000,000 kilograms of quality food that would have otherwise gone to waste, which was then used to provide 3,801,201 meals.
The Lottery Office has made a $10,000 donation to OzHarvest WA to enable its 230 volunteers to continue to collect quality, perishable food from its donors to be delivered to charities serving vulnerable community members.
The funding from The Lottery Office will help OzHarvest fight hunger and food waste through the delivery of 20,000 meals to people in need across Perth and the greater metropolitan area, promoting community health, inclusiveness and social welfare.
The Lottery Office CEO Jaclyn Wood said services providing food relief need support now more than ever.
“The WA Food Rescue Program makes a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people by providing accessible, safe avenues for food relief,” Ms Wood said.
“With new families facing food insecurity as a result of drought, fire and now COVID-19, it is imperative OzHarvest is able to continue to redistribute food that would otherwise be wasted and provide meals to those in need.”
OzHarvest has been fighting food waste for 15 years, focusing on reconnecting Australians with the value of food and reaching the national target to halve food waste by 2030 in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
